For the latest installment of Live4ever’s Essential Listening 2012 series, we’ve picked out some of our favourite music videos of the past year for you to enjoy. Some might be here for the quality of the promo, and some because we’re simply in love with the track itself, but all are included as they’ve proved to be among the most popular with our readers during the course of 2012.
From tomorrow, the business end of our annual lookback will begin with the Essential Gigs of 2012, when a select few of the many shows Live4ever has paid witness to these past twelve months will be highlighted with both live reviews and photo galleries.

Nirvana, The Shins and the Velvet Underground are among the latest acts to join the party for next month’s ‘Black Friday’ initiative.
‘Back To Black Friday’ has been organised by the people behind the annual Record Store Day events and, as previously reported on Live4ever, will this year include new vinyls from the likes of The White Stripes and The Rolling Stones.
The Shins and Sir Paul McCartney are among a variety of artists to have signed up for a new festival album which has been compiled with the help of The Decemberists‘ Chris Funk and will be released through Starbucks’ Hear Music label on October 30th.
McCartney has recorded the old classic ‘Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire‘ for ‘Christmas Rules‘, while The Shins have worked on their version of Sir Paul’s own Wings Christmas single ‘Wonderful Christmastime‘.
“I love holiday music,” co-producer Sara Matarazzo has said in a statement. “But every year I find myself going back to the standards. I wondered, where’s the holiday record for this generation?”
“As far as I’m concerned, I could walk on the moon and it wouldn’t surpass that,” she added when reflecting on persuading Paul McCartney to get involved.
A handful of upcoming bands are also taking part, with the likes of Calexico, The Civil Wars and Fruit Bats contributing. Previews of each of the songs are currently streaming on Soundcloud at this link.
The Shins brand new music video for “Bait and Switch”
The Shins have released details of a spring US tour which will support their new album ‘Port Of Morrow‘.
The Shins will release the long-awaited follow up to ‘Wincing The Night Away‘ sometime next year, according to Pitchfork.
The website reports the new album will be released through frontman James Mercer‘s own Aural Apothecary label, following the band’s long association with Sub Pop. Since the release of ‘Wincing The Night Away’ in 2007, Mercer has lent his hand to various other projects, most notably collaborating with Danger Mouse under the Broken Bells banner.
Broken Bells, the indie rock collaboration between producer Brian Burton, a.k.a Danger Mouse and The Shins’ James Mercer, have revealed they are already itching to get back into the studio to record new material despite only releasing their self-titled debut album in March.
