This week, Live4ever is shining the spotlight on some of our favourite albums and tracks of 2021 so far – today’s highlight comes from The Lathums.
It doesn’t seem too long ago that we had bands like Manic Street Preachers wondering aloud why musicians had nothing to say for themselves any more.
Today, it feels like you needn’t bother plugging in unless there’s a profoundly life-altering message to every note you write.
So much so, that to say The Lathums stand-out on Oh My Love for chasing more general, traditional themes feels like you’re starting off almost on an insult.
But how wonderfully breezy this single is. A reminder that there are still 3-minute pop songs about loss and longing out there in the ether that can juxtapose and be capable of sounding fresh, upbeat and contemporary.
On it, The Lathums also prove themselves to have that wonderful, rare knack of wearing their influences on their sleeves whilst still putting a stamp that’s unquestionably ‘them’ on what emerges out the other side.
Those influences on Oh My Love are so front and centre as to almost defy mention. But the formula worked in the past, and it’s certainly working here too.
