The final month of 2013 homes into view with a New Tunes Guide packed with highlights from Vladimir and Japanfour.
Move quick to catch Japanfour at a special launch part tonight (December 7th) at the Cabaret Voltaire in Edinburgh. The bandmates were all in their teens when they formed, and cite various offshoots of rock and roll from early blues and punk to 90s Britpop and grunge as their main influences. Their track ‘Exile’ is one of the standouts of this week’s New Tunes Guide, as is Vladimir‘s ‘Come Over’, which was recently released as a free download following support slots for the Dundee band behind the likes of the Twilight Sad, Peace and The View.

“Serving in the US Navy as a real-life air traffic controller, singer/songwriter Dave Munro sent home 4-track demos he had written and recorded during his deployment. With his enlistment up, Munro returned to hometown Boston formed the aptly-named rock band Air Traffic Controller.”
“Otherkin an alternative pop band based in Dublin. They relocated to the UK in July and released their debut EP ‘Broken English’ in April. More recently, the double A-side single ‘II’ was issued last month.”
“Lazyeyes are a four-piece from Brooklyn, New York. Formed in the summer of 2012, the band released a self-titled EP the following January and played a record release show at the legendary Williamsburg venue. Lazyeyes have recently wrapped up recording their second EP, due out before the end of the year. The band was founded by guitarist/vocalist Jason Abrishami (The Twees), who was joined by Paul Volpe (Triple Cobra) on bass and Jeremy Sampson (Eastern Hollows) on drums. The three completed the lineup in November 2012 with guitarist Renan McFarland (Ringo Deathstarr, Cool Serbia).”
“Jupiter Falls were recently signed to UNIR1 Records in the States – the first UK band to ever be signed by them. Debut album ‘Revolution’ is out on December 16th, and the ‘Revolution’ UK & US tours start in February 2014.”
“Crystal Stilts were formed in 2003 in New York City by Brad Hargett (vocals) and JB Townsend (guitar) and are currently joined by Andy Adler (bass), Keegan Cooke (drums), Kyle Forester (keys).”
“Umbrella Bed have independently released full length albums in 1996 (‘King Siz’e) and 1998 (‘Monkey’s and Rivets’). From 2003 German based label Mad Butcher Records has released ‘Last Band Standing’, ‘One Small Skank…’ and ‘GO’. The band’s primary line up has rotated some over the years but has remained largely intact. The new EP ‘Refill’ was released on November 26th.”
“UBK (Uri Brauner Kinrot) and his first solo album titled ‘Ouzo Bazooka’, have toured and recorded with NYC’s Firewater and performed at major festivals such as Glastonbury (UK), Roskilde (Denmark), Exit, WOMEX, Olinkan (Mexico City), SXSW, Sines (Portugal), Global Fest (NYC).”
“Japanfour started in their teens, unable to play instruments but determined to create music and form a punk band. Tonight (December 7th) they play a launch party at Cabaret Voltaire in Edinburgh, promoted through WTNP.”
“Ghyti is an alternative band from Adelaide, Australia who have recently released a six-track EP called ‘Life Is Cheap’. The full EP is available for download on bandcamp, and will be on iTunes from December 8th.”
