Prime Minister David Cameron is apparently on the look-out for some different bands to listen to after Johnny Marr famously ‘forbade’ him from liking The Smiths.
The PM had spoken publicly on numerous occasions of his love for the seminal Manchester band, provoking Marr to write on Twitter: “David Cameron, stop saying that you like The Smiths, no you don’t. I forbid you to like it.”
The Daily Telegraph is now reporting that Cameron, when speaking at a party organised after a record-breaking year for the British music industry, has said he has had to ‘find some other stuff’ to listen to after his telling off.
“I’m a huge music fan but obviously it’s been something of a music crisis year for me because Morrissey and Johnny Marr have said I’m not allowed to listen to The Smiths any more, so I’ve had to find some other stuff I am allowed to listen to,” Cameron is quoted as saying.
Shortly after Marr’s Twitter ban, his former bandmate Morrissey went one stage further by submitting a 1,000+ word essay to his fansite True To You, which in part declared:
“It is true that music is a universal language – the ONLY universal language, and belongs to all, one way or another. However, with fitting grimness I must report that David Cameron hunts and shoots and kills stags – apparently for pleasure. It was not for such people that either Meat is Murder or The Queen is Dead were recorded; in fact they were made as a reaction against such violence.”
