Pete Doherty‘s acting debut in Confession of a Child of the Century has been poorly received by movie critics.
The film, which also stars Charlotte Gainsbourg and Lily Cole, was given its debut to the press recently at the Cannes film festival, and sees Doherty portraying a character called Octave.
The Guardian has described the former Libertines songwriter’s performance as ‘shambling amateurisim’, while Screen Daily was equally abrasive in believing Doherty gives a ‘wooden performance’.
The Hollywood Reporter pinned the blame on the movie’s director Sylvie Verheyde for handing Doherty a role that is ‘perhaps too much to expect a first-timer to shoulder’, adding that it’s ‘hard to recall an actor looking more uncomfortable on screen’.
The toughest criticism was reserved for Cine Vue though, who branded Doherty ‘a sixth former who hasn’t learnt his lines for drama class’, and believe he will join ‘a long line of successful musicians and pop stars who have become truly awful actors’.
Hopefully it’ll all persuade him to ditch the silver screen and get The Libertines ball rolling again…
