It should only seem fitting that upon venturing within ear-shot of Melbourne’s Festival Hall – a venue famous for housing the Fab Four a half century ago – the mighty guitar racket of none-other than NME indie-rock flag-bearers The Vaccines could be heard blaring through the doors at full volume; their ragged guitar anthems cosily nestling against the gritty working-class surroundings that form the landscape around the arena.

The Vaccines were here to precede the mighty Kasabian, whom they would soon no doubt be trying to dethrone as Britain’s premier rock band of the current era.

Kasabian, Arctic Monkeys and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds are amongst the acts included on a new 2CD compilation album celebrating this year’s Brit Awards.

Kasabian guitarist and chief songwriter Serge Pizzorno has been speaking of a ‘rock n roll drought’ in music at the moment, and has said today’s scene is ‘overrun with pop’.

Comedian and star of The Mighty Boosh Noel Fielding has revealed the soundtrack for his new Noel Fielding’s Luxury Comedy television series, which he has written with Kasabian‘s Serge Pizzorno, is going to be released as an album.

“Merry fucking Christmas.”

As ever, Tom Meighan is buzzing, and with the toss of a tambourine into the crowd, Kasabian‘s frontman is the one handing presents out tonight. Yet his tireless, boundless onstage energy more accurately brings to mind a sugar-fuelled child receiving the presents on Christmas morning; careering downstairs two-at-a-time to check for half eaten mince pies, missing carrots and a tree bulging full with gifts. And like every doting parent watching on, we the audience are all too happy to be swept along in the magic during our own special night of festivities.

Kasabian have dismissed suggestions they will be the band to fill the void left by Oasis, saying they are ‘not anything like’ their idols.

Kasabian have made no secret of their admiration for Liam and Noel Gallagher over recent years, and toured with the band on several occasions following the release of their debut album in 2004.

Kasabian guitarist Serge Pizzorno has admitted he is disappointed the band will not get the chance to headline Glastonbury next year as the festival takes a break in 2012.

Kasabian‘s stage design for their upcoming UK tour will react to the applause of the audience, according to the band’s frontman Tom Meighan.

Kasabian will see in the New Year with a special one-off performance at London’s O2 Arena on December 31st.

Support at the gig will come from Chase & Status and BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe, with Kasabian commenting that the London show will be a perfect way to round off a successful 2011 for the band:

Coldplay and Kasabian lead the line-up confirmed today for the 2011 Radio 1 Student Tour.

The tour will see various acts performing special one-off university gigs across the UK, with Kasabian’s show at their home city Leicester’s University on October 26th likely to spark a mad scramble for tickets.
