Eric Clapton was joined onstage by Keith Richards over the weekend as the music world paid tribute to the late blues guitarist Hubert Sumlin.
The performance at New York’s Apollo Theatre marked Richards’ first major live outing since the end of The Rolling Stones‘ massive Bigger Bang tour, and featured performances of a number of early rock classics including ‘Going Down Slow‘, ‘Little Red Rooster‘, and ‘Spoonful‘ – fan footage of which can be viewed below.
“It’s good to be back, Goddamm it’s good to be back,” Richards is said to have told the crowd upon his return, according to Rolling Stone.
The Howlin For Hubert concert was a celebration of the music of Hubert Sumlin, who died of heart failure in December last year. At the time of his death, Richards described the musician, best known for his work with Howlin’ Wolf, as ‘warm, humorous and always encouraging’, and ‘a gentleman of the first order’.
