Third Man teams up with Sun Records for Johnny Cash reissue

johnnycashsqJack White‘s Third Man company has teamed up with the legendary Memphis label Sun Records for a series of re-issues.

A selection of Sun’s hugely influential back catalogue will be made available on 7″ black vinyl, with Johnny Cash‘s 1956 single ‘Get Rhythm‘, backed by ‘I Walk The Line‘, among the highlights. Others set for inclusion on May 21st are Rufus Thomas‘ ‘Bear Cat‘ and The Prisonaires‘ ‘Just Walking In The Rain‘.

“This will be an ongoing partnership between Sun and Third Man and future releases are already in the works,” a Third Man blog reads.

“Each release remains faithful to its original issue on Sun, replicating the classic logo and label design coupled with a striking Sun company sleeve that dutifully employs the rooster Sam Philips lamented losing as labels switched from 78’s to 45’s.”

Radio DJ Sam Phillips first set up the Sun Studios in 1950 – when it was originally known as the Memphis Recording Service – with the aim of discovering and recording new talent. ‘Rocket 88‘, widely regarded as the first rock n roll single, was recorded there soon after.
