The Drums have said they believe U2 should cut back on their political rhetoric and instead concentrate on writing ‘a good love song’.
The band’s frontman Jonathan Pierce made the comments when asked by Q Magazine about his own group’s track ‘Let’s Go Surfing‘ being used as an Obama victory song.
“A lot has happened since then, and a lot I’m not aware of, it’s difficult when you’re touring,” he said.
“We’ve thrown in the towel of keeping up of what was wrong in the world. That Obama moment, when he came into office it was a huge thing for the whole world. I’m not very political, but couldn’t help be affected.”
“I don’t think you’ll be hearing any political statements in the future. It’s really boring to me. I hate U2 and Coldplay, bands that can’t be bands for the life of them. They can’t just write great songs, they have to be doing other stuff, a statement all the time.”
“I don’t mind certain statement, but U2 haven’t released a good record in ten years, why don’t they just run for office? Just write me a great love song, that’s all I want!”
The Drums will release their second album ‘Portamento‘ on September 5th.
How old is this guy? 12? How stupid is he? When he’s been making music for about 30 yrs and has sold out every freakin gig AND has about 40 or so Grammys under his belt, then say something. Show respect dude.
It’s just his opinion…and you know what?…he’s right. U2 hasn’t released a decent album since “All that you can’t leave behind” and perhaps even farther back than that one. Whenever I read an article about U2 all that’s written is how much money they are making, what they have just spent money on or BOZO er, BONO making some sort of political statement. The money thing is funny…as if they are the ONLY rich rock stars around…why do they have to announce their earnings to the world every single goddamned time???!!!, I mean, who gives a flying fuck in a rolling donut how much money these mediocre bores make?! (LOL!). Well, here’s a novel idea for U2—how about you get back to writing good music if that’s possible. Right now, the music both sucks and blows.
Who the fuck is the drums? These drum guys need to go to school. Seriously, who are drums? You’re an idiot! After you win 22 grammys then say what you want!
Who are the Drums?
what a tool, U2’s worst album is better than anything these pillocks can come up with
AMEN Mary! Ridiculous.
To each their own, but to me all of U2’s music has been beautiful and stirring, including the latest albums. No Line on the Horizon has some amazing songs and sounds!! Fez: Being Born is unique and beautiful, and I Know I’ll Go Crazy… and Get On Your Boots are so awesome. And seeing them live is like nothing else, it’s the best! And if you pay attention to sources, U2 doesn’t release their money info, random media sites do that. And social issues is what INSPIRE the music of bands like U2 and Coldplay, so for them to be scolded–especially by some unknowns–to separate the two is hilariously RIDICULOUS.
Haha, exactly Jaime!
This might muster a grain of interest if anyone knew who The Drums were…which makes it even funnier that these unknowns can claim “U2 hasn’t put out a good album in 10 years,” signaling this band is tone-deaf. Finally, they have the audacity to tell the likes of U2 and Coldplay to separate social issues from their music?? Social issues are what INSPIRE these bands’ music, and it’s what the true fans love about these bands and their music. One thing to take away from the article, the band The Drums isn’t too bright.
The biggest wet dream The Drums can have is to get this much attention. They are mere infants who haven’t a clue. They obviously have no inspiration but they can totally blow off! Where do they get their motivation? From the sandbox?
