A previously unheard live version of ‘Sloop John B‘, recorded in 1966, has been shared online to help promote the latest re-release of The Beach Boys‘ ‘Pet Sounds‘ album. Listen at this link.
This reissue is a particularly extensive one, the 50th anniversary edition boxed as a 4CD/Blu-ray collector’s set complete with a hardbound book, the remastered album in both stereo and mono mix, session outtakes, alternate mixes and live recordings from Michigan State University, Carnegie Hall, the Paramount Theater in New York and more.
It should go without saying that ‘Pet Sounds’ is now widely regarded as one of the greatest, most influential rock recordings of all time, a painstaking labour of obsession for its main creative force Brian Wilson which also spurred his contemporaries on to create some of their own greatest work.
Wilson himself has been performing the album in its entirety during UK tour dates which included a short residency at the London Palladium.
