The death of Chris Cornell, frontman of Soundgarden, has been confirmed just hours after his band performed a gig in Detroit last night.

The late singer’s representative Brian Bumbery confirmed to the Associated Press that his death was ‘sudden and unexpected’, with no cause yet known. He added that Cornell’s family have asked for privacy at this time and will be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause of death.

Soundgarden were in the midst of a North American tour after they returned in 2010. Before then, Cornell had found more acclaim as part of the Audioslave supergroup.

Musicians have begun leaving their tributes; Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page wrote, “RIP Chris Cornell. Incredibly talented, incredibly young, incredibly missed.”

Elton John has said on Twitter that he is ‘shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Chris Cornell’, adding that he was a, ‘great singer, songwriter and the loveliest man’.
