Royal Blood live at Nottingham Arena (Gary Mather for Live4ever)
Royal Blood are preparing to release a new album next year.
The master plan for their third studio record – of combining disco beats with those familiar meaty guitar riffs – was immediately discussed by Royal Blood upon the release of Trouble’s Coming a little earlier this year, and now Mike Kerr has gone into more detail on the long held pop influences which have informed their upcoming album.
In an exclusive interview with Live4ever which can be read in full here, Kerr has singled out The Bee Gees and ABBA as two bands which helped to keep him and Ben Thatcher ‘comfortable’ as they aimed to meld these two worlds together.
“The biggest fear for us was doing something uncomfortable,” he said. “There’s the expression of ‘doing something outside your comfort zone’, but I don’t want to watch anyone being uncomfortable, it’s awkward. It was about finding something that was already in us.”
“It wasn’t like we researched finding new sounds, it was music we loved for years, like French disco, ABBA, The Bee Gees. With Trouble’s Coming, I was just thinking what it would be like if The Bee Gees were really aggressive. It made us laugh, which is the best beginning for a Royal Blood song.”
