Patti Smith has been discussing the role Hollywood star Johnny Depp played on her new album ‘Banga‘, revealing the actor built a large part of the title track around a vocal she had recorded during a phone conversation.

Speaking to Spinner, Smith explained that she had called Depp with the basic idea for ‘Banga‘ while he was filming The Rum Diary, and sang him the vocals there and then. “Then Johnny said he would send it to me so I wouldn’t forget,” she continued.

“So I’m waiting and waiting and he didn’t send it! I said, ‘Johnny, where’s ‘Banga’?’ He said, ‘Oh, you’ll get it’. And I got it, he’d put drums, guitars, everything! So the first minute of the song is all me and Johnny Depp.”

‘Banga’ was released this week, and has been preceded by the digital single ‘April Fool‘. The album, which features a song in memory of Amy Winehouse entitled ‘This Is The Girl‘, will be supported with a UK tour beginning at the Wolverhampton Civic on June 25th.
