MGMT hope to release their third album in June, reports Rolling Stone.
The duo’s third LP has been recorded during the past twelve months in Buffalo, New York, and has been described by bandmates Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser as ‘even weirder’ than its 2010 predecessor ‘Congratulations‘ – which itself displayed a stark change of approach when compared to the ‘Oracular Spectacular‘ debut – and has taken its inspiration from Aphex Twin and house music.
“We’re not trying to make music that everyone understands the first time they hear it,” Goldwasser has said, while VanWyngarden added their record label has, “No illusion on their part that we’re going to turn into a Top 40 band. That’s kind of comforting.”
The album will include a cover of the Sixties rocker ‘Introspection‘, and original tracks such as ‘Mystery Disease‘ and ‘Alien Days‘, the latter of which received its live debut in April 2012.
“The recording process was really strange, so we did a cover just to say, ‘Let’s get back to planet Earth for a second’,” co-producer Dave Fridmann has said of the ‘Introspection’ reworking.
