Martin Duffy was 55.

The death of Martin Duffy has been announced by Tim Burgess on social media.

“Another tragic loss of a beautiful soul. Martin Duffy stepped in to save The Charlatans when we lost Rob – he played with us at Knebworth and was a true friend. He toured with me in my solo band too – he was a pleasure to spend time with,” he wrote on Twitter. “Safe travels Duffy.”

Whilst Duffy played a prominent part in the Charlatans story during the mid-nineties, it was his time with Creation staples Felt and Primal Scream with which he made his name, a key figure in the Scream’s early rise to Mercury Prize winning glory on 1992’s Screamadelica.

As The Guardian reports, Duffy had also collaborated with many significant contemporaries including Beth Orton, Steve Mason, The Chemical Brothers and Paul Weller.
