Justin Vernon has confirmed he is back working on new material as Bon Iver – but is still unclear as to what the future holds for the project he appeared to put to bed for good back in 2012.
The release of second studio album ‘Bon Iver, Bon Iver‘ in 2011 brought huge acclaim for Vernon; Grammy wins, Grammy nominations and success on the US’ Billboard charts. But only a year on he was ready to walk away and, while occasional new material has appeared since, his time has been spent on different ventures including the curation of a music festival in Wisconsin.
With Bon Iver back for some live dates this month and next however, Vernon has now told Billboard he is writing too. “I’m no longer winding down, I’m not exactly sure where I am with it,” he said.
“I’ve been winding down for a number of years for numerous reasons. For exhaustion, exposure. It’s never died or anything to me. It’s one of those things that needs to be protected in my own spirit.”
“I’ve been working on music, you know, man. It takes a long time, and I’m not sure exactly what it is or what it means to me, and until that happens I won’t really know exactly what sharing it will look like or feel like or when.
