Grandaddy have cancelled this month’s North American tour as they attempt to come to terms with the death of their bass player Kevin Garcia, who passed away earlier this week after suffering a ‘massive stroke’ at the age of just 41.

“Given the circumstances, we unfortunately have to cancel our upcoming U.S. tour dates,” a statement released to Pitchfork confirms. “We hope to reschedule these at some point in the future.”

Grandaddy returned last March with the Last Place album, but shared the sad news yesterday on Facebook, writing: “There are no accurate words to express what we need to,” the band said “We are absolutely shattered to say that we lost our friend and band mate Kevin Garcia early this afternoon. He succumbed to the effects of a massive stroke.”

“We were all able to say goodbye to him and he was surrounded by his closest friends and family here in Modesto.”

The tour had been due to visit Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Pioneertown.
