Listeners of BBC 6Music have voted Gomez‘s album ‘Bring It On’ as their favourite Mercury Prize winner to-date.

“Cracking choices from the vote, so many great albums to choose from, but these are all stone cold killer,” responds Nemone, who will be leading the digital station’s coverage when it goes out live from the 2016 ceremony tomorrow.

“They reflect the current mood for aping the nineties sound as well, with four of the Top Five falling in that decade. And Gomez’s ‘Bring It On’ is an album that’s endured – can’t believe that was 18 years ago – still sounds ace when you hear it today.”

Winning in 1998, a year we shouldn’t forget did see Robbie Williams get a nomination, ‘Bring It On’ nevertheless stands today as one of the more unusual choices from Mercury judges given its roots in fairly traditional British indie, albeit with a pleasing twist of experimentation.

Second in the 6Music listeners’ list was ‘Dummy’ by Portishead, victorious in 1995, while Pulp’s ‘Different Class’ (1996), the inaugural winners Primal Scream with ‘Screamadelica’ and Arctic Monkeys’ ‘Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not’ completed the Top 5.
