Rajar’s latest quarterly figures have brought more good news for BBC 6Music.

The UK’s digital station, now one of the last safe havens for new and alternative acts, has enjoyed a new record weekly total of 2.34 million listeners, while digital listening overall has grown by another 9%.

“Digital radio has created an even playing field for national stations and it’s great to see the record-breaking performances for the leading digital-only station BBC 6 Music and the new number one digital-only commercial station, Kisstory,” Ford Ennals, CEO of Digital Radio UK, has said.

“The launch of 18 national commercial stations earlier this year on DAB has significantly expanded consumer choice and has helped boost digital listening to national commercial radio stations by 25% with almost three quarters (73%) of listening now being on a digital platform.”

BBC 6Music’s success started in earnest after it was threatened with closure due to cost cutting measures in 2010.
