WHO?
Lot van Teylingen – Vocalist; Mitchell Quitz – Guitarist; Kat Kalkman – Bassist; Emre Karayalçın – Drummer.
WHERE?
We are from Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
WHEN?
Our band’s roots began in 2021 during the summer when another COVID-19 lockdown prevented us from attending concerts and enjoying music. This period provided us with ample time to come together, form a band and create music.
WHY?
This might be the most difficult question to answer because the taste in music within our band is vastly different. On one side of the contrast, Emre seems to know every song by The Beatles by heart, while on the other end Mitchell has a peculiar fascination with hyperpop. Of course, these influences aren’t at the forefront of what shapes Library Card’s sound, but delving into our biography we seem to have agreed upon naming Protomartyr, Life Without Buildings and the poetry of Anne Clark as shared interests.
HOW?
Well, we’re not entirely certain if bands actually ‘form’. Instead, we would rather say they evolve as a result of asking your friends to jam and observing if there are commonalities in your musical ideas. Fortunately, we identified enough similarities to progress from jamming to creating actual songs together.
PAST?
As a band, we are very lucky. Some of us have pursued studies in art and have prior experience in the music industry. Kat and Lot both completed art school and are incredibly talented artists. Lot is responsible for creating all our merchandise and Kat directs all our music videos. Mitchell has experience as a booking agent and has gained significant exposure to the Dutch music industry. Interestingly, he has now transitioned into a career as a software developer. Emre is the whiz kid who is pursuing a master’s degree in mathematics, and it’s evident that their mathematical expertise greatly contributes to the intricate beats present in every song we create.
We have also been involved in several other bands, including Neighbours Burning Neighbours, AC Berkheimer, Instead Of Ella, The Lumes, Cusack and Vampire Boyfriend.
PRESENT?
The easiest way to describe our sound is ‘post-punk’, but within that broad label we believe we explore various genres. Considering the diverse influences we bring to the band, one could suggest that we are a unique blend of emo, post-rock, poetry, garage and a lot of noise.
FUTURE?
The most important aspect of our band is to have fun and share our creations with as many people as possible. Creating more music and expanding our audience is certainly a part of this, as long as it remains enjoyable.
DID YOU KNOW?
Someone screaming ‘woawawiewa’ during one of our concerts on tour. Replicating this sound became a staple for the rest of that tour.
WHAT’S NEXT?
Our latest single is the first track from our upcoming EP. We hope this marks the beginning of an exciting journey in 2024 and beyond, filled with fantastic shows, memorable tours and inspiration to create new music.
