Arctic Monkeys performed a live cover of The Beatles‘ ‘Come Together‘ during the London Olympics’ epic three-hour plus opening ceremony last night (July 27th).
The Arctic Monkeys appeared live late on at the ceremony after the United Kingdom had been led through the brand new Olympic Stadium by flag-bearer Sir Chris Hoy, and ripped through their own number one single ‘I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor‘ before launching into the Beatles’ 1969 US chart topper.
The Sheffield band formed part of an opening ceremony with strong rock associations thanks to director Danny Boyle, which saw Paul McCartney bring proceedings to a close with his perennial crowd pleaser ‘Hey Jude‘, while earlier bands including The Kinks, The Who, The Jam and the Sex Pistols had featured in a montage which celebrated the best of British music.
The rock music theme is expected to continue for next month’s closing ceremony, while Blur are due to headline a special concert in Hyde Park to mark the end of this summer’s Olympics on August 12th.
