Who frontman Roger Daltrey has said the current widespread television coverage of festivals in the UK is doing a ‘disservice’ to music.
At the moment, Glastonbury leads the way with TV exposure, thanks to the BBC’s blanket coverage of the festival across its networks, while T In The Park, Reading/Leeds, Isle Of Wight, Latitude and others all have outlets covering their events over the course of the summer.
But Daltrey has said the experience of these festivals doesn’t translate well to the medium of television, and makes him ‘want to puke’.
“I think you have to go out and experience it,” he told BBC Scotland. “I don’t think music works particularly well on TV, especially rock music. Most of the festival stuff makes me want to puke. It’s wall-to-wall stuff and they get very little money from it. Most of the mystique is taken away.”
Daltrey is currently on his own tour of the UK, performing The Who’s legendary 1969 rock opera ‘Tommy‘ in its entirety.
