Mark Lanegan was 57.

The death of Mark Lanegan has been announced in a short statement on his social media outlets.

“Our beloved friend Mark Lanegan passed away this morning at his home in Killarney, Ireland,” it reads. “A beloved singer, songwriter, author and musician he was 57 and is survived by his wife Shelley. No other information is available at this time. We ask Please respect the family privacy.”

Lanegan first made an impact as part of the Seattle grunge boom in the late eighties with the Screaming Trees, the band he’d formed earlier that decade.

He would be at the forefront of the alternative scene again once the noughties dawned, a part of Queens Of The Stone Age as the band became one the US’ biggest rock exports through the success of Rated R and, in particular, 2002’s A Song For The Deaf.

By then his solo career was already more than ten years down the line, and would be this which was the focus during the 2010s as a run of regular releases culminated with what has proved to be his final record, Straight Songs Of Sorrow, in May 2020.

Collaborations remained frequent too, with Duke Garwood among others who has been one of the many to leave his tribute on Twitter:

“My brother the beautiful poet. He loved so deep and strong . He taught me so much,my brother the wolf.”
