The forthcoming debut album from Baba Ali is out via Memphis Industries on August 27th.
Baba Ali has offered up another taste of Memory Device with a video for Got An Idea which can be enjoyed as a virtual experience over on his website.
“Got An Idea was first written with intention of it being a duet,” the New Jersey native, currently residing in London, says.
“It’s not something I’d ever done before, and it was a welcome challenge after some talks about potentially branching out for a vocal feature, which you’re seeing a lot. Funnily enough, when I was writing it, I was imagining the song as if Jamie and Allison (of The Kills) were performing it – how they usually go back and forth, line for line.”
“I was still in America when I finished an early demo, and just before my flight back to London, I went over to Brooklyn to get my friend Michelle to do the guest vocal parts.”
“At its core, the song is a callback to being a kid and you’re with your friends and you’re bored, so you have to use your imagination to keep yourself entertained. Knowing that Michelle and her partner Laurenz are video game designers, it felt like a perfect opportunity to have them build a virtual world for the song to live in.”
“I think there’s something shared between being a videogame designer with the ability to just create any imaginary world you want, and the vivid imagination skills in childhood that you’re fighting not to lose as you get older.”
Memory Device was written during lockdown, and later recorded with LCD Soundsystem and Hot Chip cohort Al Doyle in east London.
