Nick McCarthy leaves Franz Ferdinand before new album

Nick McCarthy has left Franz Ferdinand, at least for the duration of their next album’s commitments, as he devotes time instead to raising his young family.

“When we record or tour, it takes a long, full-time commitment lasting a minimum of a year and a half, most of which is spent away from home,” the band have said in a statement. “Nick has a young family and does not want to be away from them for such a long period.”

McCarthy has been on board Franz Ferdinand from the beginning, adding much to the post punk sound which brought them a Mercury Prize for the self-titled debut album and beyond.

“I’d really like to thank all the fans for being such an inspiration over the years,” he’s said. “What an amazing time it has been.”

“I’m going to concentrate on production and writing some completely different things for a bit and we can all look forward to hearing the new Franz Ferdinand album.”
