Tell us who Adam French is.
I taught myself a few instruments as a kid and carried on doing it until I could write music properly. Grew up playing in bands and carried on wanting to discover more music and get into more areas of it, whether that be production or writing or performing.
Where are you from?
I’m from Congleton in the north-west of England. A tiny town that no-one’s heard of and probably never will. It’s 40 minutes from Manchester.
Where would you have played in Congleton?
As a teenager in a band we used to play the bars and stuff – mainly because we couldn’t get served so we thought the only way of getting drunk in a bar was to go play a gig. Stoke-on-Trent was the nearest place, we played a lot in Manchester.
What was the starting point for going solo?
I’d always written stuff. I found out I was actually writing stuff that was a bit too honest to show to the band, so I had a little bank of songs that I hadn’t shown to them anyway. And they decided they were going to go to university in Leeds, it became too much hassle to keep on top of it, and then I developed a following for the solo stuff back home.
What’s next for you?
I’m going to be recording the album for about a month, we’re putting out another EP (‘Face To Face’ – out now) and then as soon as that’s out that’s pretty much me on tour. Then another EP in July or August. So it’s all systems go.
Live4ever:
Forgive the Brett Anderson fringe circa-1991 because Adam French wasn’t even born then – maybe a glint in his mother’s eye – as French has the cheekbones and a whole raft of talent to go with them.
‘Face To Face’ is the lead track for his new EP and an infectious number it is too. From Congleton to London (why wouldn’t you?) with tunes, talent and backing from the likes of Huw Stephens and BBC Introducing it’s simple to see why they are latching onto this pretty boy who tells us throughout ‘Face To Face’ that, “you give me that feeling.”
Is it love forlorn, love unrequited, or love from afar? Whatever the case French should be feeling “a whole lotta love” from multitudes of people in the coming months.
