Rough Trade shops in the UK will donate all profits from David Bowie sales to Cancer Research for the remainder of this month after the musical icon’s death was announced this morning (January 11th).

It was revealed Bowie had been battling cancer for 18 months, and passed away ‘peacefully’ surrounded by his family in New York. Rough Trade are remembering him in a fitting way then, writing on Twitter that ‘all profits from our Bowie sales during January will be donated’.

The tributes left to Bowie today are now pretty much countless, but it was perhaps Tony Visconti – his long-term collaborator and the producer of his final studio album ‘Blackstar‘ – who said it best in a statement which reads:

“He always did what he wanted to do And he wanted to do it his way and he wanted to do it the best way. His death was no different from his life – a work of Art. He made ‘Blackstar’ for us, his parting gift. I knew for a year this was the way it would be. I wasn’t, however, prepared for it. He was an extraordinary man, full of love and life.”

“He will always be with us. For now, it is appropriate to cry.”
