Glastonbury aims to restrict alcohol consumption on-site

Those attending this month’s Glastonbury festival will face tighter restrictions on the amount of alcohol they are able to bring on to Worthy Farm, reports e-festivals.co.uk.

While Glastonbury remains the sole major UK event to allow festival-goers unrestricted freedom to consume their own alcohol – other festivals such as Reading/Leeds, with separate arena and camping areas, only allow personal alcohol in the accommodation zones – they have now decided to restrict the amount of drink which will be allowed through the gates.

“BRINGING ALCOHOL ON SITE Glastonbury is the only major UK festival that allows you to take alcohol into the event,” an email sent out to attendees reads. “However, we need to encourage reasonable consumption and discourage over-consumption, so there are some provisions.”

“Any alcohol brought onto the site must be for personal consumption only. No glass bottles can be brought onto the site. You must be able to carry your alcohol yourself, without using any wheeled devices, including trolleys, wheelbarrows and wheeled suitcases. Any Alcohol which is brought to the gates using a wheeled device will not be allowed in, and may be confiscated. We hope you have a safe and enjoyable Festival.”

Glasto boss Michael Eavis followed up with following statement today: “In reference to the email about alcohol that went out to Glastonbury 2013 ticket holders this morning, my personal preference is for people that come to our festival to drink much less!

A survey conducted by MSN reported yesterday that only 45% of those quizzed said their main reason for visiting a festival was for the music.
