After being confirmed as the first headliners for Hard Rock Calling when the festival moves to its new Olympic Park home this summer, Kasabian frontman Tom Meighan has been reflecting on the mixed bag of live music which the park’s main stadium was treated to during the 2012 Olympic Games’ opening and closing ceremonies.

Quoted in today’s Sun newspaper, Meighan says there were some ‘horrifying bits’ during the two ceremonies – especially the Spice Girls‘ brief cameo.

“We were on tour during the Olympics but I saw some bits on telly,” he said. “There were some horrifying bits, like The Spice Girls. That really didn’t do the place justice. That was the most horrifying bit. It was just horrible.”

Kasabian will headline Hard Rock Calling on June 29th, the day before Bruce Springsteen is due to make a surprise return to the event which cut his set short last year.

“We’ll be the first band to play the park, so it’s great,” Meighan continues. “It’s our only headline gig this year in England so it’s wonderful. Some amazing bands have played Hard Rock Calling. It will be cool to be in the Olympic Park. We’re the youngest act to headline the festival. The Killers have got about ten years on us so it’s an honour.”

Paul Weller, The Cribs and Tribes are some of the other acts to have been confirmed for 2013.
