Graham Coxon: Blur under pressure to ‘do more’ with reunion

Blur guitarist Graham Coxon has admitted there is a pressure on the band to press on with more reunion plans amidst ongoing rumours of new material being recorded ahead of a low-key UK tour and Hyde Park appearance during the summer.

After unveiling plans to perform at the Hyde Park concert celebrating the end of the summer Olympics in August, plenty of hints have been dropped by the band suggesting recording sessions are ongoing, though producer William Orbit recently told NME the sessions were abruptly halted by frontman Damon Albarn. Again, bass player Alex James appeared to counter Orbit’s allegations, writing on Twitter that he ‘loves being in the studio with Blur’.

All this has done nothing to suppress the fervour amongst fans for a first studio album from the four original Blur members since 1999, and Graham Coxon has now told Music-news the band do feel under pressure to ‘do more’ after first reuniting for a comeback tour in 2009.

“We’re all in a good place, we’re all getting on really well,” he said. “And that’s just great for now. It’s something that we have to seriously consider and bear in mind our legacy. There is a pressure for us to do more, but we can’t do it just because people want us to. We have to do it because it’s right.”

Blur will headline Hyde Park on August 12th, topping a bill which also includes The Specials and New Order.
