Live4ever’s New Tunes Guide feat. Waylayers, The Dirty Rivers and more

Posted on 25 May 2013 at 6:52am

Live4ever’s New Tunes Guide returns with two brilliant stand-out tracks from The Dirty Rivers and Waylayers.

The Dirty Rivers, formed in Liverpool a couple of years ago, were signed after just three gigs, and feature today with their second single ‘The Kid’, displaying an already fully realised sound which falls somewhere between first album Kasabian and early-90s Charlatans and is more than a match for both.

Waylayers strike from a totally different angle, but are no less impressive with their synth-led track ‘S.O.S.’, entirely justifying the ‘atmospheric pop’ tag. Scroll down for these and eight more of our favourite new tunes of the week, and check out previous editions of the New Tunes Guide right here.

Scout Killers‘ songs have been described as a “promising direction” for the music scene, drawing influences from bands such as Glassjaw, Rage Against The Machine and Queens Of The Stone Age. After the ‘We Cage The Storm’ EP and tour of 2011, Scout Killers signed to Bright Records in 2012.”

Grey Goes Down have played across the UK, including headline slots at the Birmingham O2 Academy, HMV Institute, Nottingham Rescue Rooms as well as an appearances in front of 8,000 plus at the Bulldog Bash, and supported Lostprophets for two dates in 2006.”

“Nottingham-based 5-piece Fists return with their long-awaited album PHANTASM released through Gringo Records and Hello Thor Records on limited edition vinyl and digital download on Monday 8th July.”

“Formed in Liverpool / Wirral in 2011, The Dirty Rivers shed the usual Beatles influence common to their city in favour of a darker sound, reminiscent of bands such as The Stooges, The Rolling Stones, BRMC, and The Sex Pistols. The band signed to Deltasonic Records in the summer of 2011 after just 3 live shows. They are just about to release their 2nd single ‘The Kid’, which has had BBC radio play (Janice Long show on BBC Radio 2) (Dave Monks Radio Merseyside).”

Silent Party are a new band from London consisting of singer Mike Goward, guitarist Chris Douch, bassist Dan Blatchford and drummer Luke Graham. Since forming the band they have been busy writing and recording. ‘Taxidermist’ is the first of two singles being released.”

Waylayers are Harry Lee (vocals, synths), Dave Norman (bass), and Joe Andrews (guitars). They’re based in East London and create music that has been described as ‘atmospheric pop’. They have started to announce festival dates for this Summer and there are plenty more to come, alongside their biggest headline show to date at KOKO in Camden on the 14th June.”

“From the bloodied resting place of our mother Daphne (suspected murder), came our father (Vincent), who in keeping with the tradition of the most famous girl band in the world, The Shaggs, locked us in a basement and beat us until we wrote some songs. Our songs portray our bleak outlook on life following the harrowing experiences of our adolescence at the hand of our (alleged) father. This is our story.” The Vincent(s) debut single ‘Asked Her to the Dance’ is out now.

King Eider‘s debut single ‘Drink Me Dry’ is the first taster of King Eider’s work. A five-piece hailing from Edinburgh, King Eider craft a sound rooted in stripped back musicianship and classic folksy influences. King Eider have plotted a route through shows in England and Scotland, including notable gigs at Edinburgh’s Sneaky Pete’s for Communion Records, and London’s Hootenanny.”

Live4ever’s New Tunes Guide feat. Joe Perkins, Feral Brood and Du Bellows

Posted on 02 Mar 2013 at 5:00am

The trio of highlights for the latest installment of Live4ever’s New Tunes Guide this week come courtesy of Joe Perkins, Feral Brood and Du Bellows.

Joe Perkins’ obvious classic rock influences are nicely brought to the fore by Ray Staff – a man well schooled in that rock tradition – who worked on an album in AIR Studios which you can now pick up for free. Feral Brood also display an impressive contemporary sound on their ‘Into The Woods’ EP and have already shared a stage with the likes of Razorlight since forming early last year, while Du Bellows are becoming regulars on the London circuit and can count Simon Townshend amongst others as a fan.

Live4ever’s New Tunes Guide feat. Davis Fetter, The Mariner’s Children and The Areola Treat

Posted on 23 Feb 2013 at 5:00am

For our New Tunes Guide highlights this week we present Davis Fetter, a Los Angeles-based musician first inspired by the embryonic 50s rock of Chuck Berry, and whose latest single was released right at the start of this year. The Mariner’s Children are included just as they announce a support slot with Willy Mason and prepare to release the ‘Sycamore’ EP, while The Areola Treat have emerged out of the tiny island of Malta with a sound that would have made a happy room-mate of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs some time around 2003.

Live4ever’s New Tunes Guide feat. Snapped Ankles, Wolf Alice and Ryan Vail

Posted on 16 Feb 2013 at 6:57am

Snapped Ankles describe their music as a ‘collision of art-punk and noise’ but more immediately draw to mind the atmospheric hum of late seventies new wave most expertly realised by Joy Division on their debut single ‘True Ecology (shit everywhere)’, out on Ears Have Eyes on 25th March 2013.

Elsewhere, Wolf Alice invite us to take in a story all about the boredom of misspent youth, a neutered cat called Fluffy and their own genesis in just over three minutes nonsense free rock, while Derry’s Ryan Vail is joined by Katie Cosgrove for an inescapably post-XX sound on the single ‘Sunlight’.

All three bands are the highlights of this week’s New Tunes Guide.

Live4ever’s New Tunes Guide feat. Kill For Company, Sparrow & The Workshop and Moriaty

Posted on 09 Feb 2013 at 7:03am

Live4ever’s New Tunes Guide highlights start off this week with Kill For Company – a Manchester duo who have gone and invented a ‘Guibass’ for themselves and in doing so concocted a groove heavy spiral which gradually commands attention and results in a very impressive EP. Sparrow & The Workshop release their new single ‘Shock Shock’ through independent label Song By Toad Records on March 11th and can count the likes of British Sea Power and Thee Oh Sees as touring partners, while Moriaty show off a juicy, full of flavour rock sound on their new single ‘Mindsweeper’. They promise a face melting live show, and on the basis of this track, it’s hard not to believe them.

The Scholars have previously supported Live4ever favourites The Boxer Rebellion since forming in 2008. Last year they released the singles ‘This Heart’s Built To Break’ and ‘Wired’ and made the new track ‘Love The Thunder’ available this week. Three-piece Talk Of Spring hail from Louisville and after recording five songs with Weezer cohort Marc Mcclusky, have made a new EP available on Bandcamp. Finally, Hull’s Young Jack have recently signed to Diffusion Records and are ready to head out on a UK tour this month in support of their debut single ‘Lucio’, which is today’s featured track.

Live4ever’s New Tunes Guide feat. Pickwick, Ivan & Alyosha and Guards

Posted on 26 Jan 2013 at 7:13am

Live4ever’s New Tunes Guide has excellent highlights this week from Pickwick, Ivan & Alyosha and Guards.

Pickwick will soon release a true independent album entitled ‘Can’t Talk Medicine’. The band say they ‘upgraded from the basement and set up shop in their living room’ for its recording, while multi-instrumentalist Kory Kruckenberg served as engineer. Guards is the new project of former Cults guitarist Richie Follin and Willowz drummer Loren Humphrey who have spent the last few months out on the road honing their new material.

Seattle based Ivan & Alyosha will commence a round of touring in the spring in support of debut album ‘All The Times We Had’, which has been co-produced by engineer Chad Copelin and mixed by Jesse Lauter.
