It’s difficult to describe psychedelic rock without also discussing psychedelic drugs. Most psych-heavy bands will tell you that the music is what’s most important, and that the subsequent effects of inhaling or ingesting certain substances merely provide a boost to the listening experience. That may be true, but it’s pretty clear that both fans and artists of this particular genre benefit a little more than others from the consuming of said substances.
The English do not know how to do summer. Sad, but true. We give it a go, with open-toe sandals, knotted handkerchiefs, flowery shirts and cocktails with those little paper umbrellas…but then a band like Best Coast hop over for a tour date or two and show us how it’s really done. Perhaps you’ve heard of them. They usually get some favourable adjectives thrown at them – surf garage pop punk California – rearrange as preferred.

Albums
US heavyweights Pearl Jam release their ninth studio album ‘Backspacer‘ this week, which has already received widespread praise from music critics. Former Longpigs and Pulp guitarist Richard Hawley releases ‘Truelove’s Gutter‘. Hawley is enjoying a successful period in his career; after his 2005 record ‘Coles Corner’ was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize, he was nominated in the Best Male category at the 2008 Brit Awards. He will now be hoping for further success with his new album, which one critic has described as “quietly passionate, graceful, elegant, utterly moving, and unequivocally beautiful in its honesty and sophistication.”
