The Smiths are one of the leading contenders for the 2016 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

The band is nominated for next year’s induction ceremony along with Chic, who have been up for the honour on ten different occasions in the past, and Chicago, Cheap Trick, Deep Purple, The Cars, Chaka Khan, The JB’s, Janet Jackson, Los Lobos, Steve Miller, NWA, Nine Inch Nails, The Spinners and Yes.

Fans can contribute to the overall choices at this link ahead of the final shortlist’s unveiling in December and the official ceremony in New York next April.

The Smiths became one of the UK’s leading independent lights in the eighties after releasing their self-titled debut album in 1984.

Classic singles together with seminal albums such as ‘The Queen Is Dead‘ and ‘Strangeways Here We Come‘ had quickly made them heroes by the time of their abrupt end in 1987 when guitarist Johnny Marr walked away.
