Johnny Marr has chosen to release his autobiography in 2016 through Century after a ‘hotly-contested auction’.

Marr will chart his rise to fame with The Smiths, and on to solo work and numerous other collaborations after his sudden departure from the band in 1987 via hardback and e-book form next year.

“For the past few years as I’ve been out on tour promoting my solo work fans and journalists have been asking me when I’ll write my book,” Marr says. “I’m very happy to say that the time has come to tell my story.”

The book follows his former Smiths bandmate Morrissey‘s own memoirs, simply entitled Autobiography, which was released towards the end of 2013.

“It’s the book Smiths fans have been waiting their whole lives, and the early material that Johnny has written is utterly breathtaking,” Century’s publishing director Ben Dunn. “I’m delighted that Johnny has chosen Century to be his publisher.”
