U2 guitarist The Edge has admitted he had his doubts about releasing ‘Songs Of Innocence‘ for free on iTunes.

“I absolutely had my doubts about it before we did it, and after, but it was the right thing to do,” he said during a chat with the Guardian newspaper. “It was an opportunity that will only ever come around once for anybody. I don’t think anyone would want to do it again.”

U2’s deal with Apple meant their thirteenth studio album was exposed to millions of users, but the move generally only sparked negative headlines for the supergroup and resulted in a dedicated removal tool being released for disgruntled users.

Of the furore, bass player Adam Clayton added: “The plan wasn’t to be controversial. In today’s world there is so much chatter, so in order to get through the chatter I’m afraid we are destined to make a very loud noise ourselves.”

Drummer Larry Mullen Jr. on the other hand, ‘couldn’t give a shite’.
