Black Francis: Kim Deal’s departure from Pixies was ‘awkward’

Pixies frontman Black Francis has said bass player Kim Deal‘s surprise departure from the band earlier this year was ‘awkward’.

Despite 2013 proving to be a year of increased activity for the influential US group, with new material emerging for the first time since their reunion nearly a decade ago, Deal made her decision to quit to concentrate on solo work.

“She quit the band, it was an awkward moment,” Francis has told Rolling Stone. “We didn’t hug or shake hands or anything. Joey and I just stood up and said, ‘OK’. Then we had to get out of there, so we immediately went to a bar. I had to move from coffee to alcohol.”

“I remember the last time we all sat down and had a meal, just the four of us. It was wonderful. We broke bread together, shot the shit and had a nice meal. After the meal, Kim wanted to go back to her lodging, so we all walked her to a cab. Thinking back now, I realize this was her saying goodbye. Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but I think it was meant to be our last supper.”

Pixies issued the EP ‘EP-1‘ last month after also unveiling the free download ‘Bagboy‘ in June, and are planning more new releases for next year.
