Iggy Pop finds punk ‘tedious’

Iggy Pop has said he finds the ongoing fascination with the explosion of punk in the early Seventies ‘tedious’.

Iggy Pop is considered one of the forebearers of the punk movement which first emerged out of the States in the mid-Seventies due to the sound and attitude of his band The Stooges, whose debut album arrived in 1969. But over four decades on, Iggy has told Classic Rock he has grown tired of the ongoing attention.

“They have to have a place to put me to reference in the whole thing,” he said regarding those who label him as the ‘godfather of punk’. “And they think they have to explain that to an audience of people who are similarly lacking in intelligence or education. So you get that. It’s okay. But it’s tedious.”

“We hadn’t sold out one of the shows, so the promoter wanted me to go on the radio,” he continued. “So I said: ‘Alright, I’ll do an interview.’ Well, then that wasn’t enough. They wanted me to talk about five punk songs. And I told them: ‘I don’t like punk.'”
