Nine Inch Nails leader Trent Reznor believes the rise of computer technology in the recording of music has led to a trend of ‘more fashion than substance’ in the current scene.
“I don’t really care if you can play an instrument or not,” he said during a webchat on Reddit.
“I don’t think that’s a mandatory skill required to make music that can connect with people. I do think computers have made it easy to make lazy music that sounds nice.”
“I find a fair amount of what’s championed today feels to me like it falls in that category – much more fashion than substance. There’s also a lot of current music I think is great – The Knife is a good example.”
Trent Reznor confirmed earlier this month that he is ready to take Nine Inch Nails back out on the road despite their ‘retirement’ a few years back, and said fans will witness a band that is ‘reinventing itself from scratch’.
Meanwhile, his latest collective How To Destroy Angels released their debut album ‘Welcome Oblivion‘ this week.
