David Bowie has returned from a long break from the music industry with the release of a new single entitled ‘Where Are We Now?‘ on iTunes.

The track was recorded in New York and sees Bowie resume his long-term collaborative partnership with producer Tony Visconti. It will be followed by the new album ‘The Next Day‘, his first in nearly a decade, in March.

David Bowie effectively retired from the music industry after suffering a serious health scare in 2004 during promotional duties for his ‘Reality‘ album. Scheduled tour dates were cancelled at the time, and he has made only a handful of guest appearances since.

A press statement describes ‘throwing shadows and avoiding the industry treadmill’ as ‘very David Bowie’, and adds he is, ‘the kind of artist who writes and performs what he wants when he wants’.

A promo for ‘Where Are We Now?’ has been directed by Tony Oursler and can be viewed over at Bowie’s official website.
