Hirst follows in the footsteps of last year’s designer Sir Peter Blake and Vivienne Westwood, who became the first artist to give the trophy a makeover when the Brits underwent something of a revamp in 2011.

“I am honoured to be asked to design this year’s statue, it has become such an iconic award, I love the Brits,” Hirst said.

This year’s Brit Awards ceremony will take place at the 02 Arena in London on February 20th. Tom Odell has become the first confirmed winner for 2013, after being named the Critics’ Choice recipient.

“Damien is truly one of the most important British artists and his re-imagining of the statue will make winning a 2013 Brit an even more special proposition,” Brits chairman David Joseph has said.

Actor James Corden will reprise his role as host despite becoming embroiled in a bit of a tiff last year when he was forced to cut short Adele‘s Album of The Year acceptance speech thanks to the usual ITV timing issues.
