robingibbBee Gees singer Robin Gibb died yesterday at the age of 62, his family have confirmed.

Robin Gibb was diagnosed with cancer last year, and fell into a coma last month after suffering with pneumonia.  He awoke from the coma after twelve days, raising hopes of a return to better health after a recovery which was said to have ‘confounded’ his doctors.

However, Robin Gibb’s family confirmed yesterday evening that his brave battle has ended, releasing a short statement which reads:

“The family of Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, announce with great sadness that Robin passed away today following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery. The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time.”

The music world have been quick to pay tribute to Robin and the huge success of the Bee Gees, with respected broadcaster Paul Gambaccini stating that everyone “…should be aware that the Bee Gees are second only to Lennon and McCartney as the most successful songwriting unit in British popular music.”
