The shortlist for the first ever ‘GIT Award’, which aims to find the best musician from Liverpool of the past year, has been announced.

Former Coral guitarist Bill Ryder-Jones is amongst those nominated, as are Stealing Sheep, whose 2011 performance at the Trof Café, Manchester was named as one of Live4ever’s essential gigs of last year. The award has been named after the Liverpool music blog Getintothis.

“The first GIT Award shortlist highlights the wealth of new musical talent within Merseyside,” the award’s founder, Peter Guy, has remarked. “The artists are ambitious and inventive, emotional and passionate, funny and profound. They evoke a sense of time and place, providing a wonderful snapshot of Merseyside’s varied sonic landscape proving why Liverpool is still the centre of the music universe.”

The new award received over 380 entries after being unveiled, with the winner being picked by a panel of judges ahead of the prize giving ceremony at the Leaf in Liverpool on April 27th.
