The xx have begun work on the follow up to their Mercury Music Prize winning, 2009 eponymous debut album, according to a post by the band on their newly launched blog.

It has been uncertain as to whether the band were even considering recording a second studio effort, but those doubts have been put to bed today with a post on xx-xx.co.uk which reads:

“We have started recording our second album! We have also started this blog where we will post our inspirations and pictures and favourite songs.”

The xx formed in London in 2005, and released their self-titled debut in the August of 2009. The record’s electronic-led sound was lauded by critics, and subsequently beat off competition from the likes of Laura Marling, Paul Weller and Mumford & Sons to win the Mercury Prize the following year.

Percussionist Jamie Smith has been involved with a number of remixing and production projects since the promotional duties for ‘xx‘ were brought to an end; reworking the late Gil-Scott Heron‘s final album ‘I’m New Here‘ while also remixing original tracks by acts such as Radiohead, Florence & The Machine and Adele.
