Noel Gallagher has said the current ‘unsettled’ pop world is in need of more straight talking characters like X Factor and Pop Idol mogul Simon Cowell.
Gallagher was speaking to BBC Radio 4‘s Front Row programme as part of the promotional duties for his debut solo album ‘Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds‘, and said the ‘brutally honest’ nature of Cowell is just what the music industry needs.
“This is going to sound crazy but if the music business was inhabited by more people like him it would be in a better place because he’s brutally honest,” he claimed. “He’s not pretending to be anything he’s not. He’s not claiming he’s going home and listening to The White Album.”
“If everyone in the music business were brutally honest about what their intentions were then you could sort things out, but it’s all smoke and mirrors.”
‘Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ is due for release next Monday (October 17th). Read our review here.
Usually I would agree with just about anything Noel has to say, but I don’t agree with this statement. Yes we need more people like Simon Cowell in terms of being honest with people who might have talent or not, but apart from that I find Simon Cowell to be a heartless person who really couldn’t give a rat’s ass about contestants on these shows after they make it. Do you really think it would bother him if Susan Boyle’s career suddenly came to an end? I’m certain if something had of happened to Noel in the early days of Oasis, Alan McGee would have dropped everything to make sure his most prized possession was OK.. The biggest problems with these talent shows and the people who organize them is all they see is dollar signs at the end of the day. They couldn’t give a toss what happens to the contestants involved.
I agree to a degree, but most of today’s artists are puppets on a string if you are signed to any of the remaining major labels, but what does that have to do with Mr.Cowell, probably nothing if you are not signed to any of his contracts or his label. We are not him as far as knowing whether he cares about his artists or the contestants on his shows. He is a business man and has major interests in all aspects of the game, artists, sales, ratings and other connections, if you were in his shoes, you would feel the same way.
This is not the 60’s or 70’s love era, this is Business, and as an artist, you BETTER understand and know this going in.
