Coldplay paid tribute to R.E.M last Friday (September 24th) by covering the band’s 1993 single ‘Everybody Hurts‘ during a concert in Atlanta.

Addressing the crowd, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin described R.E.M as ‘one of our favourite bands’, before launching into the cover.

“One of our favourite bands of all time, R.E.M, for some crazy reason have finished and it’s sad,” Martin said. “So with the most respect in the world, this is just to show how much they meant to us.”

R.E.M announced their split last week after a three-decade-plus career, with a statement on their official website saying:

“To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening.”

Coldplay will release new album ‘Mylo Xyloto‘ next month.
