Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has revealed recent rehearsals with Pat Smear and their ex-Nirvana bandmate Krist Novoselic resulted in the trio performing their former band’s classic 1991 single ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit‘ for the first time in almost two decades.
Speaking to the UK’s weekend newspaper The Observer, Grohl described how rehersals with Novoselic as part of his recent guest appearance on Foo Fighters’ new album ‘Wasting Light‘, meant the temptation to revisit some old favourites was too much to resist.
“Krist is on bass, Pat’s on guitar. I’m on drums. Krist says, ‘You wanna run through some oldies?’ Me and Pat look at each other,” he explained. “I mean, that’s something I’ve never considered before. I was like, ‘OK.’ Krist says, **** it, let’s do ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit.’ And Pat starts playing and we kick into it. I haven’t played that drum beat in 17 years. It was like a ghost. It was heavy.”
‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’s parent album ‘Nevermind‘ is to be re-released this year as part of the celebrations to mark the seminal record’s 20th anniversary.
