Ex-Supergrass Frontman Gaz Coombes Close To Finishing Debut Solo Album

supergrass1After the amicable split of Britpop legends Supergrass last year, the band’s former frontman Gaz Coombes has revealed he is close to finishing his debut solo album.

In an interview with Spinner, Coombes, who is also due to star in a new Toyota Yaris advert, revealed ‘five or six’ tracks are already recorded and mixed, while the remainder of material set to feature on his new LP is due to be recorded shortly.

“It’s going well actually,” he said. “I’ve got five or six completed and totally mixed, so half the album’s totally finished, and the other half is written and just in the process of recording bits and bobs and finished vocals. It’s sounding great, I’m really chuffed.”

Coombes added that Supegrass’ split had gone along way to re-energising his songwriting process, and outlined his mindset while working on his new songs. “I just really wanted to make it,” he explained. “I had a really productive couple of months, after the split. There’s a lot of songs that came from frustration, that feeling of ants in your pants, just a lot of energy blasted out.”

In April 2010, Supergrass announced their split would follow a series of farewell gigs, which ended in Paris last June.
