Keith Moon and Mani on rhythm? Jimmy Page‘s cultured lead along side Johnny Rotten‘s frenzied showmanship? Just who would make the best supergroup is a debate that’s been raging amongst music fans for years, and now our friends at MOG music network are offering one reader the chance to win a brand new signed Fender guitar courtesy of rock’s latest supergroup Tired Pony.
As any credible supergroup should, Tired Pony draws in the talents of artists from across the musical landscape, with R.E.M‘s Peter Buck, Belle & Sebastian drummer Richard Colburn, singer-songwriter Iain Archer and producer/musician Jacknife Lee all bringing their own strengths to Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody‘s original Americana-tinged vision.
Earlier this year, the collective de-camped to Portland, Oregon to record their debut album ‘The Place We Ran From‘ in just one hectic week. It was released to widespread critical acclaim in July, and received a four out of four star rating from Rolling Stone magazine.
To enter the competition, simply submit the musicians you think would comprise the greatest supergroup ever, giving us a description of why you think your choice would be the ultimate line-up. ( Please use our comment box below. Make your entry before Nov. 10) The best answer submitted to Live4ever will progress to the final round of the competition, where one overall winner will then be selected from a pool of winners from other sites.
So while you’re trying to pick your Jagger’s from your Ozzy’s, check out the video for Tired Pony’s first single ‘Dead American Writers‘, which stars rising British actor Joseph Gilgun. Good luck!
THE CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED. LIVE4EVER WILL ANNOUNCE THE WINNER AS SOON AS MOG MUSIC NETWORK INFORMS US OF THEIR CHOICE. THANKS FOR ENTERING YOUR SUPER GROUP.

Jeff Buckley – Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitar
John Bonham – Drums
Jack White – Lead Guitar, Vocals
John Paul Jones – Bass, Vocals, Keys etc.
You take arguably one of the most influential musicians of right now (Jack White) and pair him with the greatest rhythm section of all time (John Bonham and John Paul Jones), while mixing his rough song writing and blazing guitar solos with the haunting vocals of Jeff Buckley. Strange, yes, but also incredibly influential and revolutionary.
Vocals- James Dean Bradfield
Rhythm Guitar and Backing vocals- Noel Gallagher
Bass Guitar- Bruce Foxton
Lead Guitar- Johnny Marr
Drums- Alan Wren “Reni”
Ive put them above but this is my explanation. I was in two minds whether to put James Dean Bradfield for both Lead Guitar and Vocals. To me he is just an unbelievable musician and is not recognised as much as he should be. But i decided to have a five piece band and just have James on vocals because of the raw power of his voice. Noel Gallagher what can you say really, Power and talent behind the greatest band of all time, Oasis. Bruce Foxton because he was just a great bassist and created some very iconic bass riffs. Johnny Marr is just a amazing guitarist, his complicated catchy riffs would be too good to turn down for a super group. Finally Reni because of his unique iconic style of drumming. Also because of his great talent.
BONO – LEAD SINGER: Say what you like about him but there’s no doubting his singing abilities while you have to praise him as a lyricist also – U2’s One just one example. His voice suits both ballads and rockers with tunes like Sunday Bloody Sunday displaying his powerful voice while ballads like With Or Without You showing his more emotive silky voice.
JOHNNY MARR – LEAD GUITARIST: His skilful guitar along with his ability to write a composition. His jangly pop riffs can be sophisticated and catchy, while he doesn’t go off in a tangent with over bombastic guitar solos. He complements the other members of the band by the fact that his sound is not overpowering.
NOEL GALLAGHER – RHYTHYM GUITAR: Not as technically gifted as Marr, hence why he is on rhythym (!) but is gifted enough. His song writing abilities are top notch but also he has a great voice and having him on backing vocals (and maybe occasional lead vocal like he did with Oasis) tell us he has essential talents for this band.
MANI – BASS: Highly skilled bass player, his thundering and funky bass lines were pivotal for The Stone Roses Very catchy bass lines aswell.
STEWART COPELAND: Sort of similar job to what Johnny Marr does on guitar, his style isn’t smash and bash like so many great drummers but rather more subtle and complements the rhythym of the song. Along with this, he has many styles, from rock to reggae, jazz to punk which played along very well with The Police’s style.
Vocals – Roger Daltrey
(No-one could touch Daltrey pre 1980 for vocals, an amazing live frontman & legend)
Lead Guitar – Slash
(The modern day Hendrix, a versatile axeman)
Rhythm Guitar – George Harrison
(For a phycadelic twist and acoustics)
Bass – John Entwhistle
(The Ox, universally voted the greatest Bass Player of all time!)
Keyboards – Rick Wakeman
(For melody & depth to the sound. Another legend from the band Yes)
Drums – Zak Starkey (Ringo’s Son, Taught by Keith Moon. Played for Oasis & The Who..Need I say more!)
Vocals – Freddie Mercury
Not only did he have one of the greatest voices in modern music history, the man had such a sense of showmanship that is beyond comparison. He could have a an arena filled with over 100,000 people and have them in the palm of his hand quicker than a heartbeat.
Lead Guitar – David Gilmour
One of the biggest keys in playing music emotionally is not what you play, but why. He’s one of the few guitarists that realizes you don’t need to play a thousand notes to express what you want. He says more with fewer notes than nearly any other guitarist. His tone is one of the most recognized and unique of any guitarist. He could make a plastic toy guitar sound like a Stradivarius.
Rhythm Guitar – Eric Clapton
Clapton over Gilmour? Blasphemy! Why rhythm? Because it puts less pressure on him as an individual rather than the whole group. He often wanted out of the spotlight to play with a collective group. For example, he went from Blind Faith to Delaney and Bonnie & Friends, and went from the Yardbirds to John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. Even still, the fact of the matter is that while Slowhand is one of the greatest guitarists of all time, he also tends to get lazy. Even he admits that. That’s why he needs to be pushed. Playing with Gilmour would absolutely do that. In fact, Clapton seems to only match himself with other bluesmen like Doyle Bramhall II, Robert Cray and Derek Trucks. Matching him up with Gilmour would push his boundaries even more so, and I think the output would be phenomenal.
Drums – Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson
Arguably one of the most respected drummers of the past thirty years, Questo leads one of the best hip hop groups in the world, The Roots. He’s played with everybody from John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin and Iggy Pop to Madonna and Jay-Z. Even so, the best drummers have some soul. He brings old school Motown, soul and funk to modern music, but also can play rock really well. (Did I mention the afro?)
Bass – Pino Palladino
One of the most called upon bassists since the 80s, there is little this guy can’t do. He took on the nearly impossible task of replacing John Entwistle in The Who, and has been doing phenomenally well with them, all the while updating their sound through his tasteful playing. He also has played with Simon & Garfunkel, Jeff Beck, B.B. King, Richard Ashcroft, D’Angelo, Common and Erykah Badu. (And “rhythm guitarist” Eric Clapton.) He has a certain feel that few others bassists have, but is so needed to be considered a master of his instrument. Bassists need to be the backbone of the band. He is exactly that, and then some. Not only would he mesh well with Questlove due to their shared love of R&B, they could both bring a different edge to the band without overwhelming it all.
Keys – Billy Preston
Like Pino Palladino, Billy Preston was known for his background role with many groups and artists of all genres. However, he also knew how to take the forefront when needed. His skill as an organist, stemming from gospel as a kid, is soulful, funky but also dynamic. He was able to meld well with everybody and anybody, one of the reasons he was one of only two people to receive official billing with The Beatles.
My dream lineup would have to be…
Vocals: Steve Marriott
Powerful yet so soulful. Tough call between Marriott and Roger Daltrey for me.
Lead Guitar: Johnny Marr
Best (and often most underrated) Rock guitarist of the past 30 years. Marr’s unique ‘arpeggio’ style of playing, as well as ability to adapt to other styles of music make him the perfect lead guitarist.
Rhythm Guitar: George Harrison
Probably more a ‘2nd’ guitarist than just a rhythm guitarist. From an early rock n roll style to a much more maturer style of playing, its amazing how much George Harrison developed as a guitarist whilst in The Beatles. Not just a great guitarist but also a great songwriter too!
Bass Guitar: John Entwistle
AKA John “Thunderfingers” Entwistle… Simply the most amazingly skilled bassist I’ve ever heard.
Drums: Steve White
As far as drummers go they don’t come much better. Whitey’s Soul/Jazz style as well as all round technical skill make him undeniably one of the greatest drummers of all time.
Keys: Billy Preston
No rock band is complete without some keys. Not only a truly mesmerising keyboard/organ player, Preston had a great voice too.
VOCALS – Liam Gallagher
LEAD GUITAR – Jimi Hendrix
RYTHYM GUITAR – Malcolm Young
BASS – Michael ‘Flea’ Balzary
DRUMS – Keith Moon
The most distinctive and rock n roll vocalist of the past 50 years in Liam Gallagher, complimented perfectly with a psychadelic haze from Jimi Hendrix on lead guitar. Throw some killer funk and slap-bass from the world’s greatest bassist; ‘Flea’ from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The most consitent, durable and solid rythm guitarist of all time, Malcolm Young from ACDC to support Hendrix’s godly shredding and Liam’s brash snarl. Something of this magnitude needs to be held in place by none other than the greatest figure in the history of the universe to pick up two sticks and strike a hollow object in rythm – Keith Moon from The Who. Here, you have the greatest live act and rock n roll act on earth. This would wake the pharohs.
Thought this would be an interesting line-up:
Lead Guitar: Brian May (Queen):
such a distinctiv sound, he can rock a place like no other but has a lot of sensivity.
Rythm Guitar/backing vocals: Jeff Buckley
Great guitarist and his voice is just inimitable. Could be nice mix with the lead singer here (aka Florence Welsh).
Bass: Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
Again, such a unique player. Could bring a real dynamic to the group and the man can play a lot of other instruments!
Drums: Dawn Zhu (ex-El Presidente)
Drummer of a band that don’t exist anymore but the girl is rocking out and have a real charisma!
Keys: Chris Martin (Coldplay)
Not the best key player but his personnality could bring something intersting to the group!
Vocals: Florence Welsh (Florence+The Machine)
Her voice and her twisted universe could be a real asset to this superband. Associated with Jeff on vocals, this could be a dream team!
I’m gonna base this on people who are alive (otherwise I’d be here all night)…
Lead Vocals: Liam Gallagher, just a brilliant lead vocalist – such attitude (like Johnny ROtten, but Liam can sing a melody), so unique. He’s also quite a funny bastard, so it’d add to the attraction. He’s madly insane as well, which helps.
Bass/backing vocals: Paul McCartney, most melodic bass player ever and naturally he’s just a brilliant singer – even as a backing vocalist he’d be great, that McCartney scream when he’s rocking is awesome – and if he’s in the band you’d have some brilliant songs too.
Lead guitar: Brian May… as I said before, I’m picking people who are still alive to make this easier for myself. Jimmy Page is the obvious choice, but I’d put Brian May on lead here to make things more interesting – it’d be cool to see how it worked here – guitar harmonies are May’s obvious technique and it’d be cool to hear it with Liam Gallagher and Paul McCartney in the band.
Rhythm guitar: Eric Clapton, just to keep everything in perspective and to keep it grounded you’d need Clapton in here… a bit of grumpy modesty is what I’d put Clapton in here for – just to make sure the other three keep it respectable. Drums: Zak Starkey – I would put Ringo in for the same reason I put Clapton in – but when it comes down to it Zak is a much better drummer than Ringo but retains the same simplicity and originality. Zak is probably one of the best rock drummers going around and isn’t too showy – he knows how to play to a song and doesn’t overtake it by showing off. Zak would fit this band quite nicely.
This is the best competition ever! I’d do this even if there was no prize!
Vocalist – Elvis Presley
– The greatest rock n roll singer of all time, distinctive, charismatic, powerful and original.
Vocalist and Percussion – Ronnie Spector
– see above but apply for female. Amazingly beautiful too.
Guitarist/Song Writer/Vocals – John Lennon
– Arguably the greatest songwriter of all time. Real beyond words. Original rhythm style as well. “He’s an artist, give him a tuba and he’ll get you something out of it!”.
Guitarist/Song Writer/Vocals – Noel Gallagher
– In the top echelon of all time awesome songwriters. Underrated lead guitarist. Classic and understated.
Bass/Songwriter/Vocals – Sir Paul McCartney
– Unbelievably prolific superstar songwriter, gets to rekindle his timeless work with Lennon + now work with Noel. Wonderfully inventive bass player. The total package musically.
Drums – Hal Blaine
– The master drummer, “the human drum machine!”. Drummed on more classic rock and girl group records than any man alive!.
Paul McCartney – Bass / Vocals : Is the biggest bassit ever, not in technique, but in Talent Yes.
Morrisey . Genius with the voice and the pen
Noel Gallagher – Guitar and vocals reason : is Noel Gallaguer.
Ringo Star drums : was, is, and will be always a beatle
Jhonny Marr – Lead Guitar, He create a Style, a School.
waiting in the sidelines, Weller, Liam, Fran Healey, and Richard Aschcroft
Reason: All live in the same Country almost part of the time, all can Sing, all are alive!, and they should open the olympics in England
Vocals: Freddy Mercury
One of the most emotional singers, and probably one of the best singers of his generation. The best band is the one that makes music from the heart, and Freddy is a symbol of beauty in music, regardless of the image some people try to give him.
Lead Guitar and Backing Vocals: David Gilmour
To me, one of the most emotional guitarists that knows the meaning of “less is more”. Also has a smooth tone to his voice, would complement real nicely with Freddy’s powerful voice.
Rhythm Guitarist: Jimmy Hendrix
Hendrix was always more of a rhythm guitarist than a lead guitarist, he plays chords and adds notes while holding them, creating a beautiful atmosphere in songs such as Little Wing. Since with his player there’s no need to add so many technical details, him and Gilmour would complement each other.
Bass Guitar: Paul McCartney
A true entertainer, wouldn’t be just a bassist that’s in the shadow of all the great band members. He would certainly make himself as noticeable as the rest.
Drummer: Phil Collins
Also a great alternative for backing vocals. His overall talent in music is outstanding.
Lead Guitar/Vocals: Jack White
He is one of the utilitys of this buisness and he is quite good at it, while everybody remembers him as a guitar player he can play the drums and bass quite well, a must have in any supergroup.
Rhythm Guitar: Noel Gallagher
While someones slag him because he ripoff a lot to his heroes, he can do something everybody in music would like to: Catchy songs with melodies
Bass:Michael Peter Balzary “Flea”
He is one of the best if not the best in his area, in live stage he would bring a lot of fun to the others members of the band.
Drums: Zak Starkey
The only one who filled the void of filling the boots of keith moon.
Lead Vocals – Liam Gallagher
Lead Guitar – Eric Clapton
Rhythm Guitar – Noel Gallagher
Bass – Paul McCartney
Drums – Zak Starkey
Piano – John Lennon
You’ve got the best front men of all time and one of the best singers leading the group. Eric Clapton on lead guitar. The man himself can make any song itself brilliant just with his guitar skills. Then there is Noel Gallagher on rhythm guitar. He may not be the best guitar player but between him and Eric Clapton, there would be a great guitar duo. Paul McCartney is one of the best rock n roll bass players alive today. Zak Starkey is easily the best drummer alive. His skills and drumming style make him stand out. The only other drummer to ever be as good as him is Keith Moon, and he’s dead. Then on Piano, we have John Lennon. That is self explanatory.
Not only do all of these people have incredible skill, almost all of them can switch off on instruments. Almost all can play guitar, or piano, and not to mention all of them can sing besides Starkey. So they could all share vocal duties. And did I mention the sheer strength they all have as songwriters? John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Noel Gallagher are considered to be three of the greatest songwriters of all time. Then you have Eric Clapton who is considered a very good songwriter as well. And along with a few songs from Liam, no person or group could write better songs than this super group.
Boy George – best singer I`ve ever heard.
Brian May – guitar virtuoso, and with his guitar effects he could be three guitarists in one. And he`s got the best rock`n`roll hair.
Liam Gallagher – tambourine and violin, I love Liam`s tambourine patterns and I believe he could do some great work on violin, as he was learning it many years ago, I need a violin player in my band and Liam is one of rare rock stars who could do that.
Robbie Williams – piano. actual purpose for him would be crowd entertaining, he would sit and look pretty behind piano during a song, and speak with crowd between songs.
Ringo Starr – 2nd tambourine, great tambourine players are never enough.
Noel Gallagher – Drums, he did great on Dig Out Your Soul as a drummer. He`s got his own sound, which I find very interesting.
Twiggy Ramirez – bass guitar. awesome bass guitar player, he can play some plain riffs and make them sound amazing. glam as well
Vocals: Jon Bon Jovi (got the voice and still sexy as hell, I’m female by the way so I can say that!)
Drummer; Neil Pert (Rush) Talented drummer and lyricist, original fantastic solos like few others, with unusual time signatures
Lead Guitar – Slash (Guns and Roses) Simply the best, and fantastic hat!
Rhythm Guitar (and vocals) – James Hetfield (Metallica) – simply awesome, a god of rock
Bass Guitar: John Entwistle (The Who) distinctive and influential percussive and melodic playing, great fills
Keyboard: Jon Lord (Deep Purple), immense and inspired playing from a rock genius
Tenor Saxophone: John Helliwell (Supertramp) – rocks it like few others, ‘dirty’ edgy playing, forget Baker Street!
I thought it would be interesting to try to put together an all-female supergroup, as I can’t think of a time when I’ve seen that happen. (We’ll just hope that this doesn’t, hypothetically, turn into Wilson Phillips.)
I started with two women who performed together in another supergroup. KT Tunstall and Bic Runga were both involved in Neil Finn’s 7 Worlds Collide II. They did some really beautiful songwriting and harmonizing (“Black Silk Ribbon”) on that project, which I thought might be a good jumping-off point.
Next, I decided to include a couple of instrumental “multi-taskers” who also happen to have beautiful singing voices–Lisa Hannigan and Sarah Martin (Belle & Sebastian). Both ladies play several different instruments, some of them quite unusual, which I thought might give the group a more definitive kind of sound.
I chose Meg White on drums, for a couple of reasons. First, let’s face it, there aren’t very many female drummers to choose from. More importantly, her presence might keep the group from getting too folky and flowery.
Looking over this line-up, I’m thinking this could just as easily be an a capella singing group as a rock band. But these ladies are all more than good singers. I’d be tempted to just throw them all in a room and let them work out who wanted to write which songs, or play which instruments, or sing which parts. There are so many different potential musical combinations here, I’m finding it hard to narrow down the choices. Really, with this kind of talent all in one place, why would you want to think narrowly?
VOCALS – Paul Weller
LEAD GUITAR – Ben Harper
RYTHYM GUITAR – Gem Archer
BASS – James Jamerson
DRUMS – Zack Starkey
Think this could be a band with a very Rock n Roll attitude, a stylish image, all mixed with powerful Soul. The best way to turn the classic style in the modern way. Deep voices, important words, psychedelic bass line and frigheting riffs, all running fast at the rythm of the beats from Ringo’s son a Moon’s pupil.
Stylish & Angry
Lead Vocals- Brandon Flowers
Guitar-Matt Bellamy Drums – Dave Grohl Bass- Flea
THE CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED. LIVE4EVER WILL ANNOUNCE THE WINNER AS SOON AS MOG MUSIC NETWORK INFORMS US OF THEIR CHOICE. THANKS FOR ENTERING YOUR SUPER GROUP.
