Unpublished Lennon Lyrics Go On Display

Previously unseen lyrics reportedly written by John Lennon have been displayed for the first time at the White Feather:  The Spirit Of Lennon exhibition in Liverpool, which has been created by his first wife Cynthia and son Julian.

It is unclear when the lyrics were written, though curator Ann Darby believes they could date from 1966, meaning they could’ve been penned for a song intended for The Beatles’ classic album ‘Revolver‘. “When the lyrics came up for auction over ten years ago, the auctioneers Sotheby’s estimated they were written in 1966,” Darby said. “This seems to be based on the fact that some of the lyrics are written on a note sent to George Harrison by some Japanese fans. The Beatles played in Japan that year, but this could of course be a coincidence.”

Julian Lennon has said he may be prepared to use the lyrics in one of his own songs: “I don’t believe the lyrics have been used anywhere,” he said. “If the time was right, if it felt right, then I would consider looking at the lyrics and maybe trying to work with them and write something. But obviously only in honour of Dad. I guess in some respect it would be like coming home.”

The lyrics, which will be on display at the exhibition which takes place at Liverpool’s Pier Head through to December 31st are as follows:

‘Little girl I’ve come to stay,
and this time I just have to say,
I love you.
If she turns you down and you’re rejected,
Try again the best you can,
Call to see her when you’re least expected,
Tell her now she’ll understand.’
