Legendary Seattle-based record label Sub Pop could begin to release free tracks from it’s roster as part of a new initiative, according to one of the label’s leading lights.
Megan Jasper told the Seattle Weekly the label, which was the forefront of the Grunge scene after signing Nirvana in the late Eighties, could reverse a recent trend which has seen them give away free merchandise with music purchases. “Although Sub Pop is primarily known for its many fine artists and their really very fine recordings, we’re not at all opposed to expanding into the fine world of t-shirts, hats, beer cozies, and key chains,” Jasper explained. “We used to give many of these tchotchke items away for free in an effort to entice people to pay for the music, but we’re considering flipping our strategy so that people pay for the toy and receive the music for free. Just a thought.”
Sub Pop is currently home to a variety of acclaimed bands, such as Fleet Foxes, who enjoyed success with their 2008 self-titled debut, and indie duo Beach House, who’s third album ‘Teen Dream‘ is one of the stand-out releases of this year.
